Current affairs notes on August 18-21



1.The Indian Navy is to host the multilateral naval exercise named 'MILAN' at Visakhapatnam for the year 2020 in the month of March.  For the first time, this exercise is to be conducted in the mainland of ENC, Vishakapatnam.

2.The world humanitarian day 2019 was observed on August 19, 2019. The world humanitarian day 2019 theme is 'Women Humanitarians'.

3.The 14th Edition of 'KONKAN' series of annual bilateral exercises between Indian Navy and Royal Navy of Britain is currently underway off the South Coast of UK.   INS Tarkash of india participated in it.

4.'Indian Rupay Card' is launched in 'Bhutan' after the visit of the Prime Minister, Narendra Modi.

5.The United Arab Emirates will honour the Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi with the "Order of Zayed", the highest civilian award of the country. PM Modi will visit Bahrain, that will be the first-ever Prime Ministerial visit from India to Bahrain.

6.India's first 'Central Institute of Chemical Engineering & Technology' will be set up in Gujarat. 

7.The famous 'Hazratganj Chauraha' of Lucknow has been renamed as 'Atal Chowk' in memory of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

8.Union HRD Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal ‘Nishank’ launched the world’s biggest teacher training programme - , 'NISHTHA' - in New Delhi under which more than 42 lakh teachers will be trained across the country.

9.In India, the 'Sadbhavana Diwas' (or Communal Harmony Day) is celebrated every year on August 20 to commemorate birth anniversary of late former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi.

10.The 'BASIC' countries recently held their 28th Ministerial meeting on Climate Change in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Basic countries are Brazil, South Africa, India and China.

11.The 'Madhya Pradesh' government has indicated that it plans to initiate steps towards creation of a Legislative Council. Currently, six states have Legislative Councils

12.In his second visit to Bhutan, the Indian Prime Minister has inaugurated the 'Mangdechhu hydroelectric power plant'.

13.India is the largest emitter of anthropogenic 'sulphur dioxide'  in the world, as per the data released by environmental NGO Greenpeace. It is produced from burning of coal and it is known to largely contribute to air pollution.

14.'Van Mahotsava' started, It is an annual tree planting festival. In 1950, it was started by K. M. Munshi.
