Current affairs notes on August 5-8

 1.The grand temple at Rama Janmabhoomi in Ayodhya will follow the Nagara style of temple architecture. The Nagara style of temple architecture is found in northern India.

2.The Andhra Pradesh high court has stayed the notifications issued by the YSR Congress government on the formation of three capitals for the state till August 14. 1. Amaravati– legislative capital. 2. Visakhapatnam– executive capital. 3. Kurnool– judicial capital.

3. Parivar Pehchan Patra (PPP) -Launched by Haryana government. PPP will enable the citizens to get the benefits of various central and state government schemes at their door-step in a fair and transparent manner.

4. Beirut is the capital and largest city of Lebanon.  Located on a peninsula at the midpoint of Lebanon’s Mediterranean coast, Beirut is an important regional seaport. A huge explosion recently devastated the port area of the capital Beirut. The blast was caused by 2,750 tonnes of ammonium nitrate stored unsafely in a warehouse. Ammonium nitrate (NH4NO3) is a white, crystalline chemical which is soluble in water.

5. Goa joins MyGov Citizen Engagement Platform. MyGov (mygov.in) is the Government of India’s citizen engagement and crowdsourcing platform. Launched in 2014. It aims to promote active citizen participation in governance and policymaking.

6. 150th Birth Anniversary of Abanindranath Tagore on 7th August 2020. Abanindranath Tagore, the nephew of Rabindranath Tagore. He first created the ‘Indian Society of Oriental Art’ and later went on to establish Bengal school of art.

7. Japan, on 6th August, marked 75 years since the world’s first atomic bomb attack. Atomic bomb dropped on the city of Hiroshima was called “Little Boy”. Atomic bomb dropped over Nagasaki was called “Fat Man”. All of which came under the ambit of the Manhattan Project.

8. Former Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor GC Murmu was recently appointed as the new Comptroller and Auditor General of India (CAG). The CAG is mentioned in the Constitution of India under Article 148 – 151. He is the head of the Indian Audit and Accounts Department. He is the guardian of the public purse. The CAG is appointed by the President of India . He holds office for a period of six years or upto the age of 65 years, whichever is earlier.

9. The Reserve Bank of India has assigned priority sector lending (PSL) status to India’s startup sector. Priority Sector Lending means those sectors which the Government of India and Reserve Bank of India consider as important for the development of the basic needs of the country and are to be given priority over other sectors. The banks are mandated to encourage the growth of such sectors with adequate and timely credit.

10. Ministry of Agriculture funding start-ups under the innovation and agripreneurship component of Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana in 2020-21. RKVY scheme was initiated in 2007 as an umbrella scheme for ensuring holistic development of agriculture and allied sectors. The scheme incentivizes States to increase public investment in Agriculture & allied sectors.

11. Odisha has achieved another milestone in disaster management. Venkatraipur in Ganjam and Noliasahi in Jagatsinghpur have been recognised by UNESCO-IOC as Tsunami-Ready Communities. Tsunami Ready is a community performance-based programme. Initiated by the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) of UNESCO to promote tsunami preparedness through the active collaboration of public, community leaders, and national and local emergency management agencies.

12. National Handloom Day to be celebrated on 7th August. This day is celebrated on August 7 as a way to commemorate the Swadeshi Movement. Swadeshi Movement was officially proclaimed on August 7, 1905.

13. Indian Railways will introduce “Kisan Rail”, a special Parcel Train from Devlali (Maharashtra) to Danapur (Bihar). It is expected that the train will provide seamless supply chain of Perishable produce, will be a great help to the farmers.

14.Andhra Pradesh state has launched a cyber-crime awareness programme named ‘E-Rakshabandhan.

15. Recently, Pakistan has released a new political map that includes all of Jammu & Kashmir, Ladakh, Sir Creek and Junagadh. The map has been released on the eve of the first anniversary of the abrogation of special status to Jammu and Kashmir under Article 370.

16. Recently, Manipur, Nagaland and Uttarakhand, along with the Union Territory (UT) of Jammu and Kashmir have been integrated with the One Nation-One Ration Card (ONORC) Scheme. It was started as an inter-State portability of ration cards in 2019. It allows the migratory National Food Security Act (NFSA), 2013 beneficiaries to lift their entitled quota of food grains from any Fair Price Shop (FPS) of their choice anywhere in the country.

17. Karnataka, Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh rank high in the conservation of the endangered Dhole in India, according to a new study. They are also known as Asian wild dogs. The species is protected under Schedule 2 of the Wildlife Protection Act 1972 and under Appendix 2 of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES).  It is under the International Union for Conservation of Nature’s(IUCN) ‘endangered’ category. The first conservation breeding centre for dhole was built at the Indira Gandhi Zoological Park (IGZP) at Andhra Pradesh.

18. Recently, the Thenzawl Golf Resort Project in Mizoram has been virtually inaugurated. The project was implemented under the Swadesh Darshan Scheme of the Ministry of Tourism, Government of India. t was launched in 2014-15 for integrated development of theme-based tourist circuits in the country. Theme-based tourist circuits are developed on the principles of high tourist value, competitiveness and sustainability in an integrated manner to enrich tourist experience and enhance employment opportunities.

19. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has released the Monetary Policy Report for the month of August 2020. Repo rate remains at 4% and the reverse repo rate at 3.35%. Repo rate is the rate at which RBI lends money to commercial banks. Reverse repo rate is the rate at which the RBI borrows money from commercial banks within the country. RBI has kept the policy rates unchanged because of rising retail inflation levels.

20. The Prime Minister inaugurated Rashtriya Swachhata Kendra (RSK) on 8th August, 2020. RSK is an interactive experience centre on the Swachh Bharat Mission. It will impart information, awareness and education on Swachhata (sanitation) and related aspects. Swachh Bharat Mission (SBM) or Clean India Mission is a country-wide sanitation campaign launched on 2nd October, 2014.
