Current affairs notes on July 11-13


1.The Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE) has launched ‘Aatmanirbhar Skilled Employee Employer Mapping’ (ASEEM) portal to help skilled people find sustainable livelihood opportunities.

2. The National Intelligence Grid (NATGRID) has signed a memorandum of understanding with the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) to access the centralised online database on FIRs and stolen vehicles. NATGRID seeks to become the one-stop destination for security and intelligence agencies to access database related to immigration entry and exit, banking and telephone details of a suspect on a “secured platform”.

3. The fourth cycle of the All India Tiger Estimation 2018, results of which were declared on Global Tiger Day last year has entered the Guinness World Record for being the world’s largest camera trap wildlife survey. The country now has an estimated 2967 tigers as per the latest census. India is home to nearly 75% of the global tiger population.  Highest number of tigers have found in Madhya Pradesh (526), after that Karnataka has 524 and Uttarakhand is accommodating 442 tigers. While Pench Tiger Reserve in Madhya Pradesh recorded the highest number of tigers, Sathyamangalam Tiger Reserve in Tamil Nadu registered the “maximum improvement” since 2014. The National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) has launched the M-STrIPES (Monitoring System for Tigers – Intensive Protection and Ecological Status), a mobile monitoring system for forest guards for tiger estimation.

4. Assam government has decided to upgrade the Dehing Patkai Wildlife Sanctuary into a national park. The Jeypore Rainforest is a part of Dehing Patkai Elephant Reserve . It forms the largest stretch of lowland rainforest in the country.

5. The Chief Minister of Odisha, Naveen Patnaik, launched the Bhubaneswar Land Use Intelligence System (BLUIS), a flagship development of the General Administration and Public grievances departments. Odisha becomes the first state in India to use high resolution satellite imagery utilising space technology and artificial intelligence to monitor government lands.

6. Rajasthan govt launched the week long campaign "Pure for Sure" from 8th July 2020 to 14th July 2020 - to ensure the purity of the milk and dairy products.

7. Recently, the Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI) has cleared Itolizumab for restricted emergency use in Covid-19 cases. Itolizumab is a drug used to treat severe chronic plaque psoriasis. Plaque psoriasis is a chronic autoimmune condition in which skin cells build up and form scales and itchy, dry patches.

8. NTPC Ltd. has won the CII-ITC Sustainability Award 2019, under Outstanding Accomplishment in Corporate Excellence Category. Award is Instituted by the CII-ITC Centre of Excellence for Sustainable Development (CESD) in 2006. NTPC is India’s largest power corporation, established in 1975 to accelerate power development in India. It is headquartered in New Delhi.

9. Every year, 11th July is celebrated as the World Population Day. Theme for 2020: How to safeguard the health and rights of women and girls amid the Covid-19 pandemic. The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) seeks to create awareness about the issues associated with the population. Recently, the UNPFA released the State of the World Population 2020 report.

10. A webinar was hosted by the Department of Fisheries under the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying in association with the National Fisheries Development Board (NFDB) on the occasion of National Fish Farmers Day, which is celebrated on 10th July every year. NFDB was established in 2006 as an autonomous organization under the administrative control of the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare.

11. Recently, the Central government has clarified that it has no proposal to merge the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) and Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC). The merger proposal was one of the recommendations of the Tax Administrative Reforms Commission (TARC) under the chair of Parthasarathi Shome that submitted its report in 2014. CBDT provides inputs for policy and planning of direct taxes in India and is also responsible for the administration of direct tax laws through the Income Tax Department. The Central Board of Excise and Customs (CBEC) was renamed as the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) in 2018 after the roll out of Goods and Services Tax (GST).
