1.As part of Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) initiatives, SCO Peace Mission Exercise is conducted biennially for SCO member states. The joint exercise for the year 2018 will be conducted by Central Military Commission of Russia from 22 August to 29 August 2018 at Chebarkul, Chelyabinsk, Russia.

2.Colombia's President-elect 42-year-old Ivan Duque has been sworn in as the country's 60th president. He replaced Juan Manuel Santos and became the youngest president in Colombia's recent history.

3.Prime Minister Narendra Modi will launch 650 branches of India Post Payments Bank (IPPB) on the 21st August, 2018. The IPPB has been setup under the Department of Post, Ministry of Communication with 100% equity owned by the Indian government.

4.According to the Reserve Bank of India's survey of inward remittances for 2016-17, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has emerged as the top source of inward remittances.According to the survey, 82% of the total remittances received by India originated from eight countries - UAE, the U.S, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, Oman, the United Kingdom and Malaysia.

5.Axis bank has become the first bank in the country to introduce Iris Scan Authentication feature for Aadhaar -based transactions through its micro ATM tablets.

6.The 9th edition of Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit-2019 is scheduled to be held between January 18 and 20 in Gandhinagar with theme `Shaping of a New India’.

7.VS Naipaul Trinidad-born Indian origin Nobel prize wining author passed away in London, England on August 12, 2018. Major works are ‘A Bend in the River’, ‘A House for Mr Biswas’, The Writer and the World, Magic Seeds, etc.

8.Lok Sabha has passed Representation of the People (Amendment) Bill, 2017 to extend the facility of ‘proxy voting’ to overseas Indians, on the lines of service voters.The Bill proposes to allow non-resident Indians (NRIs) to emerge as a decisive force in the country’s electoral politics on their own terms.

9. The government has launched a web portal called ‘PENCIL’ (Platform for Effective Enforcement for No Child Labour) for effective implementation of the National Child Labour Project, (NCLP).


10.Operation “Madad” has been launched by the Southern Naval Command (SNC) at Kochi since 09 Aug 2018 for assisting the state administration and undertaking disaster relief operations due to the unprecedented flooding experienced in many parts of Kerala.
